How Looking Forward to Monday’s Can be a Total Game Changer

Hello there!

It’s been well documented that a majority of people, especially those who work a full time career, think that Monday is the absolute worst day of the week. It is the beginning of the week and so far away from our friendly weekend freedom.

Let’s face it, if you work for someone and feel that you don’t have much passion for your job, don’t believe you are making a difference or believe in your company’s values, hate receiving unnecessary condescending remarks from your boss, or feel as though your work life is way too stressful, than Monday’s are surely to feel like the worst day of the week.

I can tell you from personal experience, that by the time Sunday evening came around, I would get these feelings of anxiety, stress, and would start to zone in on the idea that I had 5 days of work ahead of me. My mind would be deeply focused on the thought of never knowing how bad the days were ahead of me, rather than focusing on new challenges and adventures throughout the week.

Overtime, I realized that I would enter this mind state every Sunday evening. It was as if it became an addiction. As if my mind was accustomed to the idea that Monday was made to be the worst day of the week.

Anyone experiencing this knows fully well that it makes the weeks feel longer and at times, make us feel as if we are imprisoned to our jobs. But what if we were to change our attitude towards Monday’s? What if I could change my own attitude towards ‘the worst’ day of the week? What if instead of psyching ourselves out Sunday evening, dreading going into work, we can “trick” our mind into thinking that Monday is one of the best days of the week?

So I conducted an experiment….

I started to have fun with the idea of pretending to love Mondays. I would communicate with employees and acquaintances about how much I loved Mondays. People would converse with me saying “Thank God it’s Friday.” I would say “Yes, thank God it’s almost Monday again.” People would pause, look at me dead in the face, and think that I was sick in the head for saying that. I would laugh about it with them.

But overtime, something that turned into a practical joke and a pretend thought, turned out to become a reality.

I was able to pretend long enough about how much I loved Mondays that it became a reality. One could almost relate this to the idea of not enjoying a type of vegetable or food- after forcing yourself to eat it and telling yourself how much you love this food over and over again, you develop a taste bud for it.

Part of my new Sunday night routine is prepping for the week with intentionality. This includes self care time such as stretching, meal prep, getting a good night’s sleep and most importantly scheduling my extracurriculars after work. By setting myself up for the week I reduce my stress load for the following days and I have planned fun activities so I know I have something to look forward to, which helps me push through those sh***y days at work.

Now, Monday is the day I look forward to. This shift has helped shape my perspective and  has improved my lifestyle. Instead of dreading Sunday evenings and Monday mornings, I feel excited for what adventures the week will bring me, the challenges that will confront me because these moments of adversary are the ones that contribute to your personal growth the most. There is no good or bad, it just is. Every encounter we experience in life even throughout the work week is a lesson that is here to teach us.

Food for Thought….

So if our mind can change the way we view how we feel about Mondays, could we use the same rule to help us out how we feel at work? Let’s be bold and THINK BIGGER- how about the idea that we have the possibility to change our entire life by living it the way we’ve always wanted to by simply changing our views? If you believe in this as much as I do, than it sounds like we are the one’s stopping ourselves from making major and incredible changes in our own lives.
